The exercise scienceconcentration area is not an open option for a degree (i.e., acceptance by UNG as well as program application and approved admission are both required). Students wishing to enter the program must submit a complete application for admission to the UNG College of Education.

Online applications are accepted twice a year: January and September.

Applications are accepted January 1-15 for students to start Exercise Science coursework the following fall semester. Applications are accepted September 1-15 for students to start Exercise Science coursework the following spring semester. (No early or late applications will be accepted).

A student’s overall GPA must be 2.75 or higher. Any applications with an overall GPA below a 2.75 will not be considered.

All admission criteria, requirements, forms, and pertinent information are outlined below.

Application Process

All students entering into the exercise science concentration area must be accepted by UNG as well as the College of Education before beginning any professionally-based coursework. A completed application must be submitted typically during the sophom*ore year and approved prior to admission to the exercise science concentration area. Also, a current resume and cover letter must be included with the application. Shadowing and observation hours may be uploaded, but are not required. Admission is required prior to enrollment in the following upper division classes: KINS 3101, KINS 3200, KINS 3350, KINS 3380, KINS 3380L, KINS 4420, KINS 4380, KINS 4435, KINS 4471, KINS 4480, and KINS 4490.

In September, complete applications will be accepted for the following spring semester admittance. In January, complete applications will be accepted for the following fall semester admittance. Refer to the College of Education Admissions Requirements page for application deadline information. If the Exercise Science admissions committee has additional questions concerning your application, an interview may be scheduled. After all interviews are completed, the admissions committee will select the most qualified students for admittance into the program. All applicants will receive a letter indicating their status, whether it be accepted, provisionally accepted, or denied. Qualified students not selected for admittance will be ranked and placed on a waiting list. Provisionally accepted students that fail to meet the qualifications will have their acceptance letter withdrawn and the first qualified applicant on the waiting list will be considered for admittance.

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for admission to the Exercise Science concentration area within the Department of Kinesiology, a student must be accepted as a student by the University of North Georgia and meet the following minimum requirements:

1. Complete 35 semester hours of earned credit and have an overall grade point average of 2.75 or higher at the time of application;
2. Complete all courses in Area A (Essential Skills), BIOL 2120K, BIOL 2130K, and KINS 2100 with grades of “C” or higher. All prerequisite courses must be successfully completed no later than the end of the spring semester (the semester of application submission);
3. Complete the application for admission to the Exercise Science concentration. Applicants are required to upload PDF versions of the following documents as part of their online application: A Cover Letter/Letter of Intent, a Resume, and responses to Exercise Science Essay Questions.Failure to provide all required uploads will result in an incomplete application which will not be reviewed for consideration.
4. Interviews may be conducted by the Exercise Science Admission Committee.

Retention in Exercise Science ConcentrationArea

One important aspect of the Exercise Science concentrationarea is the constant vigilance exercised by the faculty involved to ensure that standards of quality are maintained. The following standards must be maintained for continued retention in the concentration area:

1. compliance with rules and regulations prescribed for all students at North Georgia;
2. completion of all courses in the academic major with an academic grade of "C" or better; and
3. maintenance of an overall grade point average of 2.75 as required for concentration area admission.

Probation and Dismissal

Students may be placed on probation and/or dismissed if they fail to comply with the standards for retention in the exercise science concentration area. Two consecutive semesters or sessions on probation will result in dismissal from the exercise science concentration area. In addition, a student will not be allowed to register for KINS 4490 (Internship: Exercise Science) until the standards for retention in the exercise science concentration area are met. Due to the sensitive nature of working with both symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals in various clinical settings, this policy will be strictly enforced.

Appeals

Students denied admission to or continuance in the exercise science concentrationarea may appeal the decision. Appeals must be made in writing to the dean of the College of Education and should clearly state why an exception should be made. A student must have a minimum overall grade point average of 2.75 to be considered for admission. The dean of the College of Education will appoint an ad hoc committee to review the student's appeal. The dean's decision shall be final.

Introduction

The principal goal of the exercise science internship experience is to position a student in a quality environment that fosters learning, promotes professional growth, and gives them valuable work experience. The student is now expected to work in a professional manner utilizing the knowledge and skills acquired during their classroom experiences. Some of the benefits associated with an internship are:

• Gain practical experience in your chosen field.
• Improve personal and professional skills.
• Obtain additional references and contacts (e.g., networking).
• Enhance your opportunity with a company in obtaining employment.
• Work directly under an established individual in a position of leadership.
• Determine if your area of interest is a viable career option prior to making a long-term commitment.

Prerequisites

• Admission to the exercise science emphasis area and meeting of retention standards are mandatory.
• A minimum overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 is required.
• Completion of all kinesiology (exercise science) course requirements with at least a grade of "C" in all major courses.
• Take KINS4435/Professional Development at least two semesters prior to prospective internship semester. This course will provide information about professional networking, internship sites and potential responsibilities, and preliminary internship requirements.

KINS4490 Course Requirements

• Complete a minimum of 360 active hours for 12 semester hours of college credit.
• Course assignments will be provided through e-learning. Examples of assignments include the following:
  • discussion posts
  • journal reports
  • project development and implementation
  • formal evaluations of your performance from the site supervisor
