'Wednesday' Season 2: Everything to Know About the Netflix Series (1)

9

Netflix’s Wednesday introduced viewers to a new version of Wednesday Addams — and her story is only getting started.

The series, which premiered in November 2022, explores the iconic character (Jenna Ortega) as she attempts to master her psychic powers at Nevermore Academy while dealing with a killing spree at the hands of a mysterious monster.

Ahead of the show’s debut, Christina Ricci surprised fans when she confirmed her involvement in the show. (The actress rose to stardom after appearing in the ’90s films The Addams Family and Addams Family Values.)

During the first season, it was revealed that Ricci’s character Marilyn Thornhill was actually Laurel Gates. The teacher decided to seek revenge on Nevermore Academy after her entire family died following their own attempts to take down outcasts.

At the time, creators Miles Millar and Alfred Gough opened up about how they mapped out the rest of the series. “For us, it’s always looking at the future, and when we sit down to create a show, it’s looking at multiple seasons, ideally,” they explained to Variety.

The pair also addressed the overwhelming support from new and old fans, saying, “That’s never expected, but that’s the anticipation that hopefully the show is successful. So you always lay out at least three or four seasons’ worth of potential storylines for the characters. It can evolve and change. We certainly have a pretty clear runway of what we want to do in future seasons.”

Is 'Wednesday' Renewed for Season 2?

The series was picked up for a second season in January 2023. Filming for season 2 moved from Romania to Ireland. Due to delays following the dual SAG and WGA strikes, season 2 will presumably started streaming in 2025.

Ahead of the renewal news,Wednesday broke Netflix's streaming record with 341.2 million hours of viewing. The achievement beat out Stranger Things, which previously held the title with 335 million hours for the first week of their fourth season.

Who Is Returning to 'Wednesday'?

Ortega, Emma Myers, Percy Hynes White, Joy Sunday, Georgie Farmer and Moosa Mostafa would presumably return to Nevermore Academy. Hunter Doohan, Ricci and Jamie McShane could also come back after the events of the season 1 finale.

Thing, who was brought to life by Victor Dorobantu, will appear after becoming a fan-favorite character.

Wednesday's family, who is played by Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzmán, Isaac Ordonez and Fred Armisen, are also expected to have a bigger role in the future.

Before filming started on season 2, Steve Buscemi was cast as the new principal of Nevermore Academy.

Where Did the Story Leave Off?

During the season 1 finale, Wednesday took down Joseph Crackstone (William Houston), Laurel (Ricci) and Tyler (Doohan) with help from her friends. However, Principal Weems (Gwendoline Christie) died amid the battle and Nevermore was shut down for the rest of the semester.

On her way home, Wednesday received threats from an unknown stalker and hinted at the drama still to come.

Could Christina Ricci's Character Return?

Laurel's attempt to rid the world of outcasts didn't work out as expected. Instead, the villain was attacked by bees and Wednesday seemingly killed her.

Following the show's debut, cast members have hinted that Ricci could appear in future seasons.

"I don't think I'm allowed to say. On my end, the door is open. She was so fun to play. It's always so fun to play a villain," Ricci teased to Entertainment Tonight in March 2023.

What Would the 'Wednesday' Cast Like to See Explored in Season 2?

In November 2022, Christie teased that fans may see her again following her onscreen death. "We haven't seen her put in the ground, have we?" the Star Wars star told Digital Spy. "I feel like Larissa Weems would not really be prepared to entertain or be dominated by anything as commonplace as death."

According to Gough and Millar, their original vision for the show included three or four seasons.

Will Wednesday's Family Continue to Appear?

Gough and Millar confirmed their plans to expand the role Wednesday's family plays in the show, telling TVLine in November 2022, "We felt like we just touched the surface with those characters and the actors are so amazing in those roles."

Millar added: "Catherine is, I think, an iconic Morticia. The relationship between Wednesday and Morticia is also essential to the show, and the idea that Wednesday is trying to forge her own path outside the family is so important.”

The cast confirmed at Netflix's TUDUM event in São Paulo, Brazil, in June 2023 that season 2 will introduce another member of the Addams family. "But we don’t know who it is!” Hunter Doohan teased in the video, adding that he hopes to see Grandmama enter the fold.

What Does Jenna Ortega Want to See in ‘Wednesday’ Season 2?

“I kind of want her to be darker,” the Disney Channel alum told Entertainment Tonight in December 2022 of her hopes for Wednesday in season 2. “I want her to get more in the nitty-gritty of things and not play things so safe, because there are a lot of lines about her saving the school and doing whatever, but for me, her main drive with the monster is of a competitiveness. Kind of, 'Man, how's this guy doing this?’"

Will Jenna Ortega Play a Larger Role Behind the Scenes in Season 2?

During a roundtable interview with The Hollywood Reporter in June 2023, Ortega confirmed that she is a producer on season 2.

What Is the New Vision for the Show?

In February 2024, Ortega hinted that the supernatural aspect of the show would be expanded upon.

"Reading scripts has been exciting, seeing all of the new characters that are coming in. We’re definitely expanding on the supernatural world. Our show had all sorts of werewolves and vampires. And I think we expand on that a little bit," she told Vanity Fair. “I mean, in the first season, we had episodes that really stood out visually, like, the dance episode was a really big one for people, and that setting was very particular and it felt like Prom Night, a little bit, or Carrie. Every episode [of season 2] that I’ve read so far is like that."

She continued: "It just stands out on its own as a very memorable scene or bit or setting, which I think is what I’m most excited for, because to pull that off for eight episodes is, I think, really incredible and really lucky.”
