My new favorite way to cook meat is in the air fryer! So far we’ve loved Air Fryer Chicken Breast, Air Fryer Bacon, Air Fryer Chicken Wings, Air Fryer Salmon, and so much more!

What if I told you that you could have the juiciest, most golden, delicious piece of steak in under 20 minutes? Yep, you read that right!

This Air Fryer Steak recipe puts a decadent steak dinner on the table in a total of 17 minutes (make the kids these Air Fryer Hot Dogs and call it date night 😉).

Striploin steak is coated in simple seasonings and air fried until moist and tender in the middle and crisp on the outside. Serve it with homemade garlic butter and a crispy Baked Potato or your favorite side dishes for a delicious and easy dinner everyone will love!

Ingredients needed for air fryer steak:

  • Steak: I use two 1″ thick striploin steaks — it’s our favorite cut of steak, but any will do! Keep in mind if your steak is thinner it will cook more quickly.
  • Canola Oil: adds moisture to the meat and helps the seasonings stick.
  • Seasonings: you can keep it simple with salt and pepper or use whatever blend of seasonings you like!
  • Garlic Butter: optional, but topping the steak off with homemade garlic butter takes it to a whole new level!

Air fryer steak FAQs

What cut of meat to use?

I use 1″ thick striploin steaks, but other cuts will work as well. Try ribeye, strip steak, sirloin, etc. — just keep in mind that steaks of varying sizes will cook in more or less time.

How long does it take to cook steak in the air fryer?

You can cook the steak for anywhere from 10-14 minutes depending on how done you like it! I do 10 minutes for medium-rare, 12 minutes for medium, and 14 minutes for medium-well. Keep in mind that these guidelines only pertain to 1″ thick steaks.

Do you need to flip steak in an air fryer?

You can if you want, but it’s not necessary. I leave the steak as-is for the entire cooking time and it comes out perfectly every time!

How do you store air fried steak?

Leftover cooked steak will last in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months. To reheat, thaw in the fridge if frozen, then warm in the oven, in a skillet on the stove, or back in the air fryer until heated through.

Tips and tricks

  • Bring the meat to room temp. I always set the steak out on the counter 10-15 minutes before I’m going to cook it to bring it to room temperature. This helps it cook more evenly!
  • Preheat the air fryer. You want the air fryer to be hot before you add in the meat so it starts cooking right away. If you don’t preheat the air fryer, the outside of the meat could burn before the inside is fully cooked.
  • Remove the steak right away. Remove the steak from the basket as soon as it’s done so it doesn’t continue to cook from the residual heat.
  • Let it rest. Let the steak sit for 5-10 minutes before you slice into it so the moisture can redistribute. If you cut into it too soon, you’ll end up with dry meat.
  • Use other seasonings. I use the salt and pepper to keep it simple before I add garlic butter, but feel free to use whatever seasonings you prefer!

Serve this air fryer steak with any of your favorite sides! I love it with garlic herb dinner rolls, mashed potatoes or air fryer baked potatoes, roasted veggies, creamed corn, or broccoli salad.

First time I have tried steak in the air fryer. I like my steak medium rare, a little more toward the rare side, I cooked it 10 minutes. Next time, and there will be a next time, I will cut the cook time down by a minute or two. The steak was still juicy and tender.

I haven’t yet had the nerve to put an expensive cut of meat into an air fryer. I’ve always done them on a grill.

FAQs

How do you cook a steak in an air fryer without it drying out? ›

The best way to ensure a juicy steak is to use high heat to cook the steak quickly, which will bring it to the proper temperature without drying it out. Remember to rest your steak after air frying to allow the meat to reabsorb juices and complete its cooking time without direct heat.

What temperature do you cook steaks in the air fryer? ›

Preheat a 3.5-quart air fryer to 400 degrees F. Season the steak on both sides with a generous pinch of salt and several grinds of black pepper. Place the steak in the center of the air fryer basket and cook until desired doneness, about 10 minutes for medium-rare, 12 minutes for medium and 14 minutes for medium-well.

What's the secret to a juicy steak? ›

As is the case with so much to do with cooking steaks, there is a key temperature involved in resting a steak. The idea with resting is basically allowing the hot steak to cool to about 120 F to 125 F. At that temperature, the cells have relaxed enough so that the juices can flow back in.

Pat them dry with a paper towel to remove any excess moisture. Season both sides generously. Let the steaks sit for 15-20 minutes to allow the flavors to penetrate the meat. To prevent the steaks from sticking to the air fryer basket, lightly grease it with olive oil or cooking spray.

Do I need to flip steak in air fryer? ›

Your steak will cook through, if left on just one side. However, because flipping can place a different part of the steak closer to the heating element (for an air fryer, this is at the top), a steak will cook more evenly if flipped halfway through.

Why is my air fryer steak tough? ›

Don't use steaks that are less than an inch in thickness. Thin steaks are prone to overcooking quickly and becoming chewy. To enjoy the best flavor and texture, allow the steaks to come to room temperature for at least 30 minutes before cooking them in the air fryer.

What to season steak with? ›

There are many spices available for seasoning a steak, with salt and pepper topping the list. However, other spices, like thyme, rosemary, garlic powder, and minced onion, are also good options to enhance your steak's flavor. Or, use a one-and-done approach with Chicago Steak Seasoning.

How do you heat a medium rare steak in an air fryer? ›

Allow your steak to come to room temperature (about 30 minutes on the counter). Preheat the Air Fryer to 350°F. Place the steak into the Air Fryer basket to reheat the steak; check every 2 minutes. The cook time will depend on steak thickness, so ensure the internal temperature reaches around 110°F–130°F.

Does steak get brown in the air fryer? ›

Heat your air fryer for at least 10 minutes before adding the steaks. Set your air fryer to 400°F as soon as you begin prepping the steaks, and it'll be perfectly hot by the time you are ready. Preheating ensures that the outside of the steaks get nice and brown — similar to searing.

How do you sear and finish steak in an air fryer? ›

Place the steak on the air fryer tray and close the fryer. Allow it to cook for about three minutes and then flip the steak to the other side, allowing it to get a good sear on each side. Cook for another three minutes, or until the steak reaches your desired level of doneness.

Are steaks better in air fryer or grill? ›

Selecting the right cut can make a big difference in taste. Thicker cuts like sirloin steaks are best suited for air frying, while filet mignon shines on the grill. Regardless of your cooking method, always bring your meat to room temperature before cooking.

How do restaurants make their steaks so tender? ›

Most fine restaurants age their beef to intensify the flavor and improve the tenderness of the cut. Aging is done by letting the meat sit (in very controlled conditions) for several days or weeks.

How does Texas Roadhouse make their sirloin so tender? ›

How does Texas Roadhouse tenderise their steaks? Season each side of the steak well with the seasoning and set aside to rest for about 40 minutes. This causes the salt to infiltrate the surface (through osmosis) and actually aids in the breakdown of muscle fibres, resulting in more tender meat.

How do you keep meat from drying out in an air fryer? ›

Use Tinfoil As A Tool

Another tip that can help keep meats from losing moisture is to protect them with a physical barrier from the dry heat of the air fryer. Using tinfoil helps keep moisture locked in and around the meat, preventing over-evaporation.

Will an air fryer dry out a steak? ›

The hot surface cooks the steak quickly, which prevents the inside from overcooking and drying out. In an air fryer, the temperature combined with the fast movement of air can cause the steak to be dry by the time it's cooked. This is especially a problem when you're dealing with leaner cuts, like sirloin.

How do I make sure my steak is not dry? ›

Allow the steaks to rest.

Resting will allow the meat to relax, and the juices will return to the meat fibres. This means the juices won't run out on to the plate when you cut the steak – and results in more tender steak.
