What is checked baggage on VIA Rail? ›

Checked baggage are items that are stored in a baggage car on long distance trains. How can I make sure my carry-on items conform with VIA Rail's baggage allowance? For all information regarding carry-on baggage allowance, please consult our carry-on baggage allowance page.

Any baggage weighing more than 23 kg/50 lb will not be allowed on board the Corridor trains. Each passenger is responsible for their own baggage. Please only bring baggage that you can carry and store unassisted (under the seat in front of you, on the overhead shelf or in the towers).

This means that you would not be allowed to bring any bags with you on the flight, and would need to travel with only personal items that can fit in your pockets or a small personal item, such as a purse or backpack that can fit under the seat in front of you.

Checked luggage is dropped off at the check-in counter after you arrive at the airport. It's then weighed, labelled, screened and transported to your plane via a behind-the-scenes baggage handling system. Checked items are stored in the plane's cargo hold and are inaccessible to passengers throughout the flight.

Large suitcases

Heavy items and suitcases up to 80x57x30 fit nicely in the racks at the ends of the coaches – if your cases are bigger, you won't be able to bring them onboard. The maximum bag size on our trains is 90 x 70 x 30cm.

Gasoline, petroleum spirits, oil-based paint, lacquer, stains, shellac, oils, wood alcohol, lighter or heating fuels, matches, charcoal briquettes and any other ignitable substance.

Wi-Fi is available on all short trips within the Québec City – Windsor corridor so you can stay connected. You can bring your own food on the train, and there are also snacks, meals, and beverages available to purchase on board.

We are recommending travellers to be at the station 45 minutes prior to departure if you are travelling in the Corridor and 1 hour prior for the long distance and regional services (90 minutes prior to departure for trains 1 and 2 out of Toronto and Vancouver).

Can I bring food and drinks on Amtrak? ›

You may bring your own food and beverages onboard for consumption at your seat or private Sleeping Car accommodations. However, you can only consume food and beverages purchased in Dining and Lounge Cars in those cars. Personal food and beverages are allowed in the upper level of Superliner Sightseer Lounges.

There are two types of baggage on aircraft, which are treated differently: checked baggage and hand/carry-on luggage. Transportation companies have rules on the weight and size of both types. The weight is usually the limiting factor for checked baggage stored in the aircraft hold.
